Title: The AGATA Project
1The AGATA Project
International experimental facility for the
investigation of nuclear structure, nuclear
astrophysics and fundamental interactions
- First 4pi ?-ray spectrometer built completely
from Germanium detectors. - Based on the novel technique of gamma-ray
tracking. - Measures ? radiation in a very large energy
range, with the largest possible - efficiency and with a very good spectral
response. - Several orders of magnitude more powerful than
any current and near-future - ?ray spectrometer in the world.
- Key parameters are (i) an energy range lt 50 keV
to gt 10 MeV, (ii) a photo-peak - efficiency of about 50 at 1 MeV, (iii) a
position resolution of lt 5 mm and - (vi) a trigger rate of up to 1 MHz.

15AGATA Funding
AGATA is a moving Research Infrastructure
developed, built and operated by a truly European
research collaboration
- Too large for funding within national nuclear
structure schemes - Too small for CNI funding in FP7 based on ESFRI
criteria - Moving instrument, therefore no governance by any
accelerator facility
A dedicated funding scheme supporting medium
scale European projects is needed
- NUPNET as "natural" funding agency contact
- ERANET as appropriate funding instrument in FP7
- Possibly governance by NuPECC
- Operation as independent Research Infrastructure
eligible for TNA support in FP7
