3Why a decision making programme for HealthQWest?
- There were existing strengths in decision making
research at Stirling, Glasgow Caledonian and
NMAHP-RU. - Potential for collaboration across other
HealthQWest programmes. - The judgments and decisions of NMAHPs are central
to healthcare provision and improving health in
Scotland.
4- Fundamental Aim of the Decision Making Programme
- Establish HealthQWest as the major UK centre for
NMAHP decision making research and to establish a
centre of international excellence. - Aim 1. Conduct research in participation and
decision making which is scientifically sound,
clinically relevant and of importance to clients,
professionals and policy makers. - Aim 2. Improve the patient experience by
understanding and improving participation and
decision making. - Aim 3. Develop and support research capacity
amongst nurses and allied health professionals in
the field of decision making.
5Activities Conducting research.
- With NHS-24, Lena Murray seconded to study
factors influencing the decision by Nurse
Advisors to refer a patient onto the out-of-hours
care. - With the Scottish Ambulance Service and NMAHP-RU,
2 staff seconded to study treat and refer
decisions and consistency in decision making. - Also examples of Capacity Building in the NHS.

- Two judgment and decision making symposiums in
May and June 2006. - Professor James Shanteau, Psychology, Kansas
State University - Professor Rob Hamm, Medical decision making,
University of Oklahoma
- Dr Carl Thompson, Department of Health Sciences,
University of York - Dr Dawn Dowding, Department of Health Sciences,
University of York and Hull York Medical School - Four Scottish speakers, U Stirling and NMAHP-RU
7External collaborations
- With Dublin City University and NUI Galway on two
projects studying judgment and decision making of
nurses using the general judgment and decision
making model. - With Dr Carl Thompson on the effects of
experience and time pressure on decision making
performance of acute care nurses. - With Professor Shanteau on the measurement of
expertise.
8A sample of forthcoming projects
- Patients and nurses assessments and decisions
about leg wounds. - The decision to transfer Risk assessment and
decision making in labour. - Clinicians assessment and decision making
regarding patients readiness to transfer from
the State Hospital. - Plus at least four in the pipeline.
9Looking forward
- New Post-doctoral fellow appointed. Anne
Pingenot is an experienced nurse from the US with
a PhD in the psychology of decision making. - New PhD student on nurses decisions about
weaning patients from respirators in ICU. - Conduct a 15 week lecture and discussion course
on the theories, methods and applications of
judgment and decision making. - Seek external funding for projects including
joint projects with other HealthQWest programmes.
