Why you must scan regularly

• You are at risk from viruses
• Number of known viruses 86000
• Hundreds of new viruses each month (1200
  according to Sophos as of Jan 2002)
• If you dont have virus protection, then you run
  the risk of network outage and losing data.

Doesnt InterCheck scan all the time?

• InterCheck scans all files that become active,
  for instance, that the user opens
• InterCheck will not detect dormant viruses
• You should use the Sophos virus engine to perform
  an intensive scan of each computer in order to
  detect viruses even before they are accessed

How do you scan regularly?

• Use the Sophos anti-virus engine
• Each and every computer on your network must be
  scanned
• Dont forget servers
• If your institution has more than one network or
  subnets, make sure you scan both
• Scan any device with an operating system
• Even photocopiers can have a windows operating
  system!
• Go to each computer and run a scan

• Log on to the computer
• Open the Sophos virus engine
• Usually StartgtprogramsgtSophos Anti-VirusgtSophos
  Anti-Virus
• Alternatively double-click the InterCheck icon
  in your system tray if this is present. Right
  click InterCheck monitor and select Sophos
  Anti-Virus.

• You should now see the following screen
• Make sure the Immediate tab is selected, as shown
  here
• Make sure that all the computers drives are
  selected
• If not use the add button to add all the drives
• Select OptionsgtConfiguration

• Select the action tab
• Make sure that only disinfect boot sectors and
  Request confirmation boxes are checked
• Click OK
• Click GO

• If no viruses have been detected then no further
  action need be taken
• If a virus is detected, then you will need to
  follow the instructions in what to do if you
  detect a virus
