4Overview
- An old history
- Structure of the Department
- Some figures
- Decision and communication channels
- Objectives for 2004
- My view of the Department
- The challenge of the Grid !
5History of IT Department
- Link with some milestones/records
- ???(before 1985) DD Data ???
- 1990 CN (Computing Networks) WWW ?
- 1997 IT (Information technology)
- Overview showing evolution of computer equipment
in building 49 (passerelle)
6The 2003 re-organisation
- The whole laboratory is reorganised
- To increase efficiency and to improve
communication (lean management) gt better
conditions to complete LHC in time - To free resources to prepare CERNs long-term
future - June 2003 Council approval of the new structure
- And IT ?
- All group leaders in IT, AS and ETT-DH prepared
in close collaboration the merger into 1
Department - Very constructive discussion, successfully
terminated in October, and fully implemented by 1
January - First semester of 2004 massive number of moves,
to bring people physically together - New structure to be reviewed in due course and
adjusted if required

- IT related within CERN
- DTF
- JCOP
- CAEC
13Main Goals 2004 External Activitieshttp//cern.c
h/it-div/what-we-do/MissionAndGoals.asp
- Reflect the new CERN structure in all
administrative computing services (problematic
due to missing input) - Ensure continued smooth operation of IT services
infrastructure (network, mail, web, payroll,
EDH, ) - Introduce new admin tools (very long list of
requests) - Complete GSM migration (major long-term
economies) - Provide engineering support for LHC
communications - Deploy and run LCG-2 service for data challenges
- Conclude EU DataGrid, EU DataTag and Gridstart
successfully - Launch EGEE project in harmony with LCG
- Host CHEP 2004 with a balanced budget
- Contribute to CERNs 50th anniversary festivities
- Review with other departments computing practices
and identify global economies
14Main Goals 2004 (2)Internal Activities
- Complete the integration of IT department and
profit from the synergies - Optimise services where possible to reduce cost
and align better with standard practices - Use savings to fund consolidation of ageing
infrastructure (recover backlog) - Prepare for LHC more electrical power,
preparations for big purchasing (market surveys) - Review role of IT-related committees
- Have a critical look at internal overheads
