2
Agenda
  • Learning Objects Defined
  • MERLOT
  • CLOE
  • Institutional Example CLOE_at_Queens
  • ELIXR

3
Scenario
  • Teacher teaches the same material year after year
  • Each year in week two a concept is poorly
    understood by students
  • Called
  • Instructional bottleneck
  • Instruction challenge

4
Learning Objects Definition
  • Sample definitions
  • Interactive computer program
  • 15 minutes to 2 hours
  • One sitting
  • Addresses an Instructional Bottleneck
  • Ultimately, learning objects are any digital
entity designed to meet a specific learning
outcome that can be reused to support learning.

SCORM Content
  • Reusable easily modified with different
    development tools
  • Accessible searchable and available as needed
    for learners and content developers
  • Interoperable capable of operating across a
range of hardware, operating systems and web
    browsers
  • Durable compatible with newer versions of system
    software
  • (Numen Communications)

8
Using Learning Objects
  • How to integrate Learning Objects into a course
  • Optional doesnt work
  • Extra work not necessarily good
  • Must be integral to the course design

9
  • Learning Object Repositories

MERLOT
  • Multimedia
  • Educational
  • Resources for
  • Learning and
  • Online
  • Teaching
  • www.merlot.org

11
MERLOT
  • Learning Object repository
  • Over 15,000 resources
  • Only 1953 are peer reviewed
  • Not all Learning Objects are free
  • Annual conference (Ottawa August 8-11)
  • Journal of Online Learning and Teaching
  • CLOE is a Sustaining Partner of MERLOT

12
CLOE
  • Collaborative project of all Ontario
    universities, 7 colleges, MUN, UM,
  • Purpose is to develop an innovative
    infrastructure for joint development of
    multimedia-rich learning resources.
  • Faculty collaboration for shared content
    resources in online learning
  • 117 Learning Objects currently in database
  • http//www.cloe.on.ca/

CLOE in Action
Instructor Submits LOs to CLOE
LO is triaged and then Peer Reviewed
LO is made available for sign-out in CLOE
CLOE LO Repository
Usage reported by CLOE
Instructor searches CLOE
Instructor signs-out LO from CLOE
Institution hosts LO for their students for
duration of course

CLOE Activities
  • a) Collaborative Design
  • We collaboratively design/build/evaluate Learning
    Objects
  • Camp CLOE each May
  • Monthly audio-conferences
  • Meet in person 3 times a year
  • Produce Learning Objects that are free of local
nuances and thus easier to re-use
  • We evaluate everything we build

15
b) Case Stories
  • Instructors wanted to hear stories of others who
    were sharing
  • We have built 8 Case Stories showing Learning
Object re-use from the instructors perspective
  • http//lt3.uwaterloo.ca/CLOE/stories.html

c) Learning Impact Studies
  • We have conducted nine Learning Impact Studies
showing Learning Object re-use from the
    perspective of
  • Instructor
  • Student
  • Instructional Designers
  • Deans, VPs, and others wanted to know if Learning
    Objects are effective
  • http//lt3.uwaterloo.ca/CLOE/documents/cloe_assess
    ment.pdf

18
d) Peer Review
  • A committee developed the peer review process
that was then approved by all CLOE members.
  • Worked closely with MERLOT
  • Guidelines for authors provided online
  • Opportunity to become a peer reviewer
  • http//lt3.uwaterloo.ca/CLOE/peerreview.html

19
e) Learning Object Award
  • Dr. Jonathan Swallow Award for CLOE Excellence
  • There are two award categories and eligible
candidates can be individuals or teams who
  • 1. Created a learning object which meets the
    CLOE Guidelines for Authors criteria.Or2.
Reused a CLOE learning object and evaluated the
implementation of the learning object (i.e.,
    learning impact study).
  • Due May 1 each year
  • http//lt3.uwaterloo.ca/CLOE/awards.html

The Institutional Level CLOE_at_Queens
  • Each of the partner universities is responsible
for developing and reusing Learning Objects that
can be reused by the other institutions.
  • CLOE_at_Queen's is Queen's University's contribution
    to this collaborative project.
  • You can submit a Project Proposal to develop a
    Learning Object
