Impressions only

• My impressions as cousin from Québec
  observer.

• Compare to tourist travel in US. On the surface,
  there are abundant similarities that we share
  however, below the surface we see different legal
  structures, history, customs, and particularly
  solutions that reflect local needs.

Il faut s afficher

• Importance of Votre santé avant tout Services
  en français distinctive logo, sticker, pin but
  requires broad acceptance to be effective. In
  Quebec, I rarely see anything like the English /
  French services stickers other than in post
  offices or outlets.
• Green scarf enthusiasm / spirit / pride in what
  has been achieved a way to unite divergent
  levels. Stirring to see.
• Ran Wednesday Saturday, including AGM 4 full
  days 450 delegates / guests. A very comprehensive
  event.

Leadership

• HG proclaimed in his address on est connecté!
  and he proved it repeatedly. (in many ways,
  politically fed. prov., contacts within the
  communities, links to education sector, on the
  ground).
• Nous Nous mutual benefit. Stressed as far
  more profitable strategy than confrontation.

Guests / speakers

• One federal minister (Josée Verner (francophonie
  et langues officielles), several provincial
  ministers - Chris dEntremont (Health Nova
  Scotia), Madeleine Meilleur (Ontario Services
  sociaux et communautaires) Michael Murphy (Health
  NB), Chester Gillan (Health - PEI) as
  speakers w/staffers (some unilingual English) in
  attendance, as well as video welcome from Health
  Minister Tony Clement. Obviously, they thought it
  was important to be present indication of
  significant buy-in at the political level.

• Dr. Alex Green People thinking they can
  communicate effectively in another language.

• Impressed by the quality / abundance of info
  brochures (both general very specific topics) /
  web sites ( links!) both unilingual French and
  bilingual (I admit that I have hardly begun
  exploring).
• Truly pan-Canadian very in-your-face poster
  from Yukon, La santé cest aussi une question
  de langue, Montrez-la! contacts with
  representatives from Newfoundland, northern B.C.,
  Nunavut.

Maturity

• SSF organization shows evidence of maturity
  invited international guests with strong links to
  SSF, like Dr. Charles Boelen. And they
  demonstrated confidence in inviting him to
  criticize the evolution of their organization.
  (Équité Qualité Pertinence Cout / efficacité.
• Prise en charge par la communauté - language

• The struggles for the Monfort Hospital received
  recognition long, passionate campaign Le
  Droit played role. Observed how strongly that
  motivated the community, had far-reaching impact.
• Wide-ranging lunch-time address by PDG Gérald
  Savoie, looking ahead, far ahead not back.
• Consortium national de formation en santé asset
  / security blanket in more isolated areas.
• Si les professionels se sentent appuyés, ils
  hésiteront moins à travailler dans une région /
  ayant une communauté francophone.

• Répertoire de professionnels (des fournisseurs
  de services de santé en français) some tested,
  some not. Have reached out into private sector,
  not limited to public network. Graded Levels I
  IV in linguistic ability to provide their
  services. (Reminder A service that would be
  considered wholly inadequate in one region might
  well be considered as a minor miracle in a more
  isolated area with very small target population).
• La Loi 8 (Ontario) quasi-constitutionelle
  used as a tool to press for expanded services -
  might want to compare to our legislative
  framework and our reliance on programmes daccès
  in theory revised every three years.
• Moins de têtes grises quici. Inquiétudes
  exprimées au sujet de la capacité linguistique
  (mariage / enfants / écoles) mais pas de
  génération absente comme chez les anglos du
  Québec. (La porte est ouverte dans les deux
  sens!)

Hors du Québec, point de salut?

• Ceux qui croient encore Hors du Québec, point
  de salut simply not true!
• There is evident interest in Quebec scene, but no
  reliance on Quebec as the source of francophone
  health care support.

Limportance de la langue dans les soins de santé

• If I was to emphasize one thing I took away from
  the Conference, it was not an official component
  of the program but documentation outlining a
  workshop on

• prendre les mesures qui simposent pour
  indiquer aux membres du public quils peuvent
  obtenir des services dans la languede leur
  choix.

• Loffre active pas seulement un outil de
  communication, mais un symbole de respect.
• SSF consistently appears to take a more
  pro-active approach to this vital issue.

• Le défi daméliorer la santé des francophones en
  situation minoritaire ne peut être relevé avec
  succès que si les autorités gouvernemetales sont
  ouvertes, les institutions et les professionnels
  de la santé sont engagés et les communautés
  francophones sont mobilisés. Lapproche du Comité
  vise à développer cette dynamique de changement.
  Elle invite les communautés francophones en
  situation minoritaire avec ses partenaires de la
  santé à se prendre en charge et à se mobiliser en
  ce qui a trait à lamélioration de laccès aux
  services de santé dans leur milieu.

• I take that to indicate that, although
  significant strides have been made, maybe even
  undreamed of achievements, there remains a
  tremendous amount of work left to do at all
  levels for them, and by extension, for us!
• I would expect that we will continue to follow
  similar, but not necessarily parallel, paths
  (cheminement), but both groups can profit from
  close collaboration.
