?????? ???????
  • Nominal sentences in the Arabic language are
sentences that do not start (as the first word of
the sentence) with a verb. This kind of
sentences areto some extent--similar to English
    equational sentence
  • The book is new.

?????? ???????
  • The book is new.
  • The verb to be here is separating a noun from
its adjective to form a complete/full sentence.
The book then, functions as the subject of the
sentence and new is the predicate of the
sentence.Notice that this sentence is different
    from the phrase
  • The new book
  • Which is NOT a complete sentence.

  • Similarly, in Arabic, sentences starting with
anything other than a verb are categorized as
    nominal/nominative sentences. Lets exam the
    same sentence translated into Arabic

?????? ???????
  • ?????????? ????????
  • ???????
  • Literally means the initial/starting piece of
information. By itself it does not say much.
  • ?????
  • Can be translated to mean news, information, or
statement. As the name indicates, this part of
the sentence is descriptive it contains the
necessary information that clarifies the subject
    and makes the sentencegrammaticallycomplete.

  • In the absence of any modifiers, the Mubtadas
case ending is nominal and so is that of the
Khabar. This case ending is marked by the Dammah
(or Tanween al-Raf) on the last letters of
    words.
