3My Trip to the Dominican Republic
- We will begin our lesson by taking a virtual trip
- to the Dominican Republic. During our trip we
- will learn about the music, food, and some of
- the culture of the country. Take note that you
- will need the itinerary/note sheet and the
- spending log at the end of this virtual trip.
4Musica
The instruments used in Dominican music can be
made from house hold items. An example of this
is the cow bell and guiro. The Guiro is made
from recycled materials, such as metal foil or
hollow wood. To play the guiro one must use a
pick. The picture above shows a guiro and pick.
The Dominican Republic is known for two forms of
music Merengue and Bachata.

5- Merengue music is usually fast paced. The
instruments include different types drums. - The use of drums in merengue show the African
influence. - Today Merengue is popular in many countries and
played by many different people.

6Bachata
- Bachata is the other form of music that
originated in the Dominican Republic. This music
is slower and usually sadder. - Bachata used to be the music of the military and
people of lower economic status. - Today Bachata is very popular in all classes.
7La Comida de La Republica Dominicana
- Dominican food is very similar to Cuban and
Puerto Rican food. - Plantains, Rice, Beans, stews, and a variety of
meats make up typical Dominican dishes. - Since it is a tropical country they eat tropical
fruits. - Eg. Pineapples, coconuts, papaya, passion fruit.

- ?The Dominican Republic is an underdeveloped
country. - ?Today for every American dollar you receive 32
Dominican Pesos. - ?Tourism is very important to the country.

around the country, where people dress up.
