Todays Topic
  • The Social Construction of Disabilities in
    Non-school Institutions

3
Announcements
  • Final essay due in two weeks.
  • Remember, no late papers accepted for the final
    assignment.
  • Keep going with the wiki through the last week of
    class (not finals week).
  • Come and see me if you have questions.

4
Quick questions or quandaries?
5
Small group activity
  • Consider the information provided in the links on
the class outline regarding the proposed
    Community Choice Act.
  • Discuss ways in which our legislative and system
    of social "supports" construct disability.

6
Whole Group Discussion
  • The People First of Montana Campaign (video)
states that 25 of SSI income is lost if people
with disabilities marry and that this pushes them
even further below the poverty line. (674 674
    1011)
  • So what? If they dont marry, but live together
without formalizing it in any way, why isnt that
good enough? Isnt this a lot of bother over an
    outdated social institution?

7
Quick Write
  • Provide examples from the assigned readings of
ways in which social systems or institutions can
    create or exacerbate disabilities.

8
Small group discussion
  • Krogh and Johnson (2006) ask who has the power
    to define disability? (p. 162).
  • In your small groups discuss the influence the
medical model of disability might have on the
lives of people with disabilities in hospital or
    home-care settings? (Provide specific examples
from the readings or personal experience.)

From Peter Singers Home Page
  • Q. You have been quoted as saying "Killing a
defective infant is not morally equivalent to
killing a person. Sometimes it is not wrong at
    all." Is that quote accurate?
  • A. It is accurate, but can be misleading if read
without an understanding of what I mean by the
term person. I use the term "person" to refer
to a being who is capable of anticipating the
future, of having wants and desires for the
    future. (http//www.princeton.edu/p
    singer/faq.html)

10
Group Discussion
  • Peter Singers position may seem extreme, but
have you seen any evidence of similar attitudes
    in the general population?
  • For example, consider Jerrys Kids. What is the
purpose of some of these organizations?

11
Caution!
Before we become advocates --charging off to
fix the system for people with disabilities, we
need to
  • Understand what people with disabilities want
fixed we must advocate with not for.
  • Fix our own handicapist attitudes and behaviors.
