• ROM 7 1-6

• 7 Or do you not know, brethren (for I am
  speaking to those who know the law), that the law
  has jurisdiction over a person as long as he
  lives? 2 For the married woman is bound by law to
  her husband while he is living but if her
  husband dies, she is released from the law
  concerning the husband. 3 So then if, while her
  husband is living, she is joined to another man,
  she shall be called an adulteress but if her
  husband dies, she is free from the law, so that
  she is not an adulteress, though she is joined to
  another man. 4 Therefore, my brethren, you also
  were made to die to the Law through the body of
  Christ, that you might be joined to another, to
  Him who was raised from the dead, that we might
  bear fruit for God. 5 For while we were in the
  flesh, the sinful passions, which were aroused by
  the Law, were at work in the members of our body
  to bear fruit for death. 6 But now we have been
  released from the Law, having died to that by
  which we were bound, so that we serve in newness
  of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter.

• Justification - the sovereign and gracious act
  of God where He declares believers righteous.
• Justification takes place the moment we believe.

• Sanctification.
• But now having been freed from sin and enslaved
  to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in
  sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life.

• Sanctification means to be set apart

• Positionally we are set apart the moment we
  trust Christ which we refer to as justification,
  Progressively we are set apart throughout life as
  we mature spiritually and grow in Christ
  likeness, which is how we most often understand
  and use the term sanctification and how it is
  used in here in chapters 6-8 and ultimately when
  the believer arrives in Gods presence in heaven
  which we refer to as glorification.

• Ultimately we will be finally set apart when we
  arrives in Gods presence in heaven which we
  refer to as Glorification.

• In chapter 6, Paul also provided a basic
  understanding or knowledge of the nature of our
  union with Christ, but also explains our
  relationship as believers to sin.

• In the context of 614 Paul is referring to the
  contrast between law and grace as the means of
  justification.
• We are not justified by obedience to the law,
  only by Gods grace.

  by the works of the Law but through faith in
  Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ
  Jesus, that we may be justified by faith in
  Christ, and not by the works of the Law since by
  the works of the Law shall no flesh be justified.

  the judgments which the Lord your God has

  in the land where you are going over to possess

• The conclusion, when all has been heard, is
  fear God and keep His commandments, because this
  applies to every person. Eccles. 1213 NASB

• Faithfulness to the law superseded faith in the
  God who had given the law.

• A married person is bound by law to his or her
  spouse only as long as the spouse lives. If your
  spouse dies, you are no longer bound by law to
  him or her. The law of marriage binds people
  only while they are alive.

• Paul is emphasizing Christ's present
  relationship with all believers. The body of
  Christ referrers to His crucified body on the
  cross. Christians are identified with Christ's
  death in the past, which releases them from their
  bondage to sin and also their bondage to the law.
  But not only that we are also identified with a
  living Savior in the present.

• The wonderful thing about this truth - believers
  are free from having to earn or from trying to
  earn their salvation. The resurrection of Jesus
  (v. 4) is the key to that reality.
• He was delivered over to death for our sins and
  was raised to life for our justification Ro 425
  NIV.

• The purpose of every believer's life is to
  glorify God by bearing fruit. V. 4
• Salvation has a byproduct a transformed life
  that bears fruit for God.

• What is that fruit?
• "The fruit of the Spirit or the fruit produced
  by the Spirit in the life of a believers is love,
  joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness,
  faith, meekness, self-control." Gal 522-23

• Salvation produces within the believer a
  transformed mind-set, or transformed attitudes.

• For we are His workmanship, created in Christ
  Jesus for good works, which God prepared
  beforehand, that we should walk in them. Eph 210

• The fruit of a new life in Christ is not only
  new attitudes but new actions as well - Actions
  that honor and glorify God.

• We serve in newness of the Spirit and not in
  oldness of the letter.
• But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not
  under the Law.

• We are not justified by keeping the law nor are
  we sanctified by struggling to keep the law.
• We are justified by grace and we are sanctified
  by the power of the indwelling Spirit of God.

• Because we are justified by grace and sanctified
  by the Spirit doesnt mean the law is irrelevant
  or that we have no more obligation to it.

• We are now able to meet the laws demands for
  righteousness

• We now have an new desire motive and ability to
  obey Gods law through the indwelling of Gods
  Spirit

• As believers, we are dead to the law. We are no
  longer under its bondage or condemnation. We
  now live in newness of the Spirit, which means we
  are more eager and willing and able to live by
  its godly standards out of love and desire rather
  than compulsion.
