Soft X-ray Camera (SXC) for ECLAIRS Why?
  • Science Drivers for limited-function SXC
  • Major Goal of ECLAIRs Discovery of high
    redshift GRBs
  • CdTe Instrunment (HET) is likely to provide only
    10 error boxes
  • Need a vernier to reduce CdTe error boxes to
    lt1
  • Important for prompt ground-based IR searches for
z gt 7 GRBs, since few large telescopes have IR
    imagers w. FOV gt 3 (Reason 1K x 1K HgCdTe
    arrays _at_ 0.2 arcsec/pixel)
  • HETE and Swift results indicate at most 10 of
ECLAIRS GRBs will be at high-z, or 10 per year
for ECLAIRS. Since chance that a specific
ground-based telescope can promptly observe a
given burst is 10, would need 10 telescopes
with Dgt3 meters to effectively search ECLAIRS/HET
    10 error box.
  • Error boxes of 1 would assure that all high-z
    candidates are observed in IR.
  • SXC can readily provide 1 error boxes
  • Measure 1- 4 keV prompt emission in XRFs, XRRs,
    and GRBs

MIT X-ray CCD Cameras Flight Experience
  • ASCA SIS (1993-2000)
  • First Photon-counting X-ray CCD ever flown
  • Operated 8 years in orbit (satellite re-entry)
  • Chandra ACIS (1999-)
  • Principal focal plane detector on NASA Great
    Observatory
  • 6 years successful operation
  • HETE SXC (2000-)
  • Provides 1 arcmin error boxes for GRBs
  • 5 years successful operation thus far
  • Pathfinder for ECLAIRS SXC
  • Astro-E2 XIS (2005-)
  • Launched in July planned for 8 year lifetime
  • Fully checked out and operating successfully
  • Flight Quality X-ray CCDs available for ECLAIRS
