2New Year
How do people around the world celebrate the
coming of the New Year? There are many customs
watching fireworks, eating special foods... In
Thailand they throw water on people, in Spain
people eat 12 grapes as the clock chimes twelve
midnight... Many of these New Year's customs are
intended to bring good luck during the new year.
3Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year is celebrated in Chinese
communities all over the world. It begins on the
first day of the first lunar month of the Chinese
calendar (in January or February).
In China they have nine days for holidays during
New Year.
4- In China, on New Year's Eve ...
- people clean their homes.
- children wear brand new clothes.
- children gather lucky money from adults.
- people eat special food dumplings, chicken, and
fish have meanings of good luck. - people give oranges to friends. Oranges
symbolise good luck. - after dinner, many people go out to a flower show
and buy flowers. - all family members get together and chat.
5India
Diwali is the Hindu festival for celebrating the
Hindu New Year. Some people light decorated
candles, clay lamps and other lights and put
them in their windows to have look luck.
Diwali is an important family festival. After
dressing in new clothes, families visit one
another and exchange gifts and sweets.
6Burning "Mr Old Year" is a New Year's tradition
in some cities of Colombia. Families fabricate a
big stuffed male doll that represents the old
year. They stuff the doll with different
materials, little fireworks and objects that can
bring sadness or bad memories. They dress the
man with old clothes from each member of the
family. On New Year's Eve at midnight, they burn
the doll. People want to start a happy New Year
without bad memories.
Colombia
7Argentina
In Argentina, families have a late dinner (about
1100 p.m.) and wait for midnight. At midnight
everybody lights fireworks for half-hour more or
less. Then young people go to New Year parties at
dance clubs until the next morning. The next
day (January 1st) most people will go swimming in
rivers, lakes or public swimming pools.
