Note The blood supply to the spinal cord comes
from the anterior and posterior spinal arteries
AND from branches of segmental arteries (i.e.,
intercostals that you should know from your
Integrated Medical Anatomy course). The spinal
branches of these segmental arteries divide into
dorsal and ventral radicular arteries that
supply the roots. Also, at some spinal levels
(shown), but NOT all, the spinal branches also
give rise to dorsal and ventral spinal medullary
arteries. These supplement the post. spinal
arteries and the anterior spinal artery. An
especially large and famous ventral medullary
artery arises from either T11- or T12
intercostal artery on the left and is called the
artery of Adamkiewicz classic national board
questionclassic NB). This feeder of the ant.
spinal artery is important in supplying the
lumbar cord and can be damaged during thoracic
operations. TAKE HOME the ant. and post.
spinals need help from the vent. and dors. spinal
med arteries, which do not arise from ALL all
segmental arteries.
