(week 4) Dr. Somsri Jansom
2
Review of week 2
  • Nativism
  • Interactionism

3
Overview of Week 3
  • Theories of L1 acquisition
  • Cognitivism
  • The rationalist and empiricist
  • The formalism and functionalism
  • The concepts of nature and nurture

4
Cognitivism Definition
  • The cognitivist school basically went inside the
head of the learner to see what mental process
were activated and changed the course of
learning. In cognitive theories, knowledge is
viewed as symbolic mental constructs in the
learners mind, and the learning process is the
means by which these symbolic representations are
    committed to memory.

5
Cognitivism Contributor
  • Jean Piaget (1896-1980) was a Swiss philosopher
    and developmental psychologist.
  • well known for his work studying children and
found that children dont think like grownups.

Cognitivism Major concepts
  • Language is one of several abilities that result
    from cognitive maturation.
  • Learning process may be unique to human beings.
  • Cognitive processes are the focus of study.
  • Unobservable mental process can often be drawn
    from behavior.

9
Cognitivism Major concepts
  • Learning involves the formation of mental
associations that are not necessarily reflected
    in overt behavior changes.
  • Knowledge is a process of relating new
    information to previously learned info.
  • Individuals are actively involved in the learning
    process.

Compare Nativism to Cognitivism
  • Same Both pay attention to mental process
  • Different
  • Cognitivists say the structures of language
emerge as the result of the continuing
    interaction between the individuals current
    cognitive functioning and his/her current
    (non)linguistic environment.
  • Nativists say Linguistic environment is
unable to account for the abstract, complex, and
    specific structure of language.

12
Compare Interactionism to Cognitivism
  • Same Both agree that a child plays an active
    role in their learning/ development.
  • Different
  • Cognitivists say learning is mental activity
Need to restructure the input in the brain Need
practice to be fluent Lg development depend upon
    cognitive development.
  • Interactionists say People need other people to
help them learn adults adjust their language to
    help the learners understanding Learning
started since the time of birth or even earlier.
