• William Shakespeare was born in 1564. He lived
  with his Mum and Dad in Stratford Upon Avon. His
  Dad was a glove maker.

• William had a brother called Gilbert.
• When they were boys they would help their
  father to make gloves

• William went to grammar school. Boys did
  their writing with a quill pen which was made out
  of a feather. They dipped it in ink.They read
  from a hornbook which was made of wood. The
  alphabet was written on it.

• School started at 6 oclock in summer and
  finished at 5 o clock.
• School started at 8 o clock in the Winter
  and finished at 4 o clock.
• Children used pens made from feathers and ink
  made from soot from the chimney.

• William Shakespeare married a lady called Anne
  Hathway. They had three children. Now William was
  a glove maker.

• Times were hard.
• People did not want to buy as many gloves.
• William lost his job.
• He decided to be an actor.
• He joined some travelling players and left
  his wife to look after the children.

• The actors travelled around England.
• They put on plays for rich people in their
  houses in the Winter. If they liked the play they
  gave the actors money.

• In the summer the actors would put on plays
  in the street in front of the inn.
• There were not many theatres.
• If the people did not like the story, they
  would throw things at the actors.

• William Shakespeare began to write plays for
  the actors. People really liked them.
• Even Queen Elizabeth the First liked them.

• William was very busy.
• He wrote lots of stories and the actors put
  them on in a new theatre called the Rose.
• When Queen Elizabeth died he wrote stories
  for the new King.
• He was called King James.
• He wrote one about witches, it was called
  Macbeth.

The theatre had a stage with people sitting above
it.The restof the audience stood up in front of
it.The stage was outside, there was no roof on
the theatre.

• William Shakespeare wrote 37 plays altogether.
  
• He was a writer, an actor and a theatre owner.
• When he was 47 he retired to Stratford.
• He was now quite rich and very famous.
