  • This workshop is designed for teachers new to
    Diamond Middle School. Each year there are
    approximately 5-10 new faculty members

Objectives
  • After learning about the library program,
    teachers will collaborate with the librarian to
    design a lesson which incorporates information
    literacy skills into their curricula
  • After learning about the library program,
    teachers will require students to use specific
    library resources in an assignment

  • Recent studies show that teachers have little
    knowledge or misconstrued ideas about information
    literacy and the role of the teacher librarian.

  • the fact is that most preservice teachers are
    not introduced to the role of the
    teacher-librarian or the school library program.

    can provide for you and your students.

Mission and Goals
  • The mission of the library media program is to
    ensure that students and staff are effective
    users of ideas information. This mission is
    accomplished
  • by providing intellectual physical access to
    materials in all formats
  • by providing instruction to foster competence
    stimulate interest in reading, viewing, and using
    information ideas
  • by working with other educators to design
    learning strategies to meet the needs of
    individual students

Roles Responsibilities of the School Library
Media Specialist
  • Teacher

As a teacher
  • the library media specialist collaborates with
    students other members of the learning
    community to analyze learning information
    needs, to locate use resources that will meet
    those needs, to understand communicate the
    information the resources provide. An effective
    instructor of students, the library media
    specialist is knowledgeable about current
    research on teaching learning skilled in
    applying its findings to a variety of
    situations

As Instructional Partner
  • the library media specialist joins with teachers
    others to identify links across student
    information needs, curricular content, learning
    outcomes, and a wide variety of print, nonprint,
    electronic information sources.Committed to
    the process of collaboration, the library media
    specialist works closely with individual teachers
    in the critical areas of designing authentic
    learning tasks assessments integrating the
    information communication abilities required to
    meet subject matter standards.

  • the library media specialist provides leadership
    expertise in acquiring evaluating information
    resources in all formats in bringing awareness
    of information issues into collaborative
    relationships with teachers, administrators,
    students, others in modeling for students

    library media center.
