Title: BONUS: INNReach NSW Trial

1
BONUS INNReach NSW Trial
  • Presented by
  • Joyce Cornelius
  • Peter Doyle
  • Robert Parker
  • 27th August 2004

2
BONUS INNReach NSW Trial What is it???
  • Resource sharing for libraries that want to
partner with a group of libraries whether or not
theyre a partner of a formal consortia.
  • Connects multiple library automation systems and
allows patrons from one library to search the
    combined holdings of participant libraries,
request and borrow materials e.g. a book
belonging to another library to be delivered to
their preferred pickup location within a few
    days.

3
BONUS INNReach NSW Trial What is it - contd
  • E.g. a student from UTS can request a book from
Uni of Newcastle to be delivered to UNSW. The
book could be returned at UTS Kuringa-gai campus
library where the loan is discharged and the item
    is returned to Newcastle
  • Enables expanding the librarys catalogue
without having to spend resources on new
    acquisition.

4
Libraries Involved
  • UNSW
  • UTS, Sydney
  • CSU
  • Uni of Newcastle

5
Why is UNSW participating in trial?
  • Looking at the logistics of resource sharing
    across the state
  • Goal of UNISON is to maximise and simplify access
to scholarly information to staff and students of
    our university

6
Potential Benefits of Project
  • No need to re-register patron on host system i.e.
INN Reach system can identify available copies if
local copy is unavailable as well as accept
    clients preferred pickup location benefits
    could extend to distance students.
  • Studies in US have indicated that service
processes loans at lower cost compared to
    traditional ILL systems
  • Shared purchasing power by sharing resources
  • Expanding librarys catalogue without having to
    spend resources on new acquisitions
  • Easy to run and configure
  • System tools to monitor transactions

7
Potential Disadvantages
  • Increased demand on and competition for local
    resources
  • Internal political issues of local copies being
unavailable and students having to wait/request
    from other libraries
  • Additional resources required to provide this
    service including
  • a) staff resources needed to
  • Process requests, retrieve and package items at
    the lending library
  • Unpack items, manage hold shelves and lend items
    at host library
  • Return/set in-transit status and package items at
    host library
  • Unpack, return and re-shelve lent material at
    lending library.
  • b) Postage and handling costs
  • Costs associated with hardware./software, system
    setup, ongoing maintenance and management
  • Conflict with ULA charging policy

8
Who can borrow
  • Undergraduates and postgraduates from Kensington
    and COFA
  • General and academic staff Kensington and COFA

9
From Where???
  • Any of the participating libraries i.e. UTS,
    CSU, Uni of Newcastle, UNSW

10
What can be borrowed?
  • From UNSW
  • Monographs only from general collection i.e.
    standard/ 4 week loans.
  • Includes materials from Kensington, COFA WRL.
  • From other institutions
  • Monographs and some audio visual.

11
What cannot be borrowed???
  • From UNSW
  • Serials/journals, reference materials, av,
    MyCourse/Reserve materials, rare books, genbase
    collection, theses, maps
  • From other libraries
  • Similar to UNSW

12
Trial Information
  • Length of trial 2 years
  • Initiative of UNILINC and Innovative Interfaces
    INN-Reach resource sharing system
  • INN-Reach will operate on a gratis basis for
clients with the 4 participants sharing the cost
    of the software licence
  • UNISON funding project officer for the trial
    period.
  • Uni of Newcastle will host the servers and
support the software and operating systems.
  • Trial should be up and running by Nov 2004??

13
Project Implementation- whats involved
  • Site coordinators from each library as well as
related staff (e.g. Mallika, Robert P from UNSW)
    met with representatives from UNILINC
  • First meeting 2x3 hr orientation/consultation
sessions by Tim Auger (INN-Reach manager from
    Innovative Interfaces) via telephone conference
  • 2nd meeting included discussions on profiling
worksheets for each library and the central
server, delivery options, and requirements for
    extracting sample data.

14
Delivery Options
  • Several options looked at e.g commercial
    couriers, rail services, Australia Post
  • Option selected Australia Post due to
    cheaper/competitive pricing and delivery
overnight Sydney-Newcastle and 2nd day delivery
    to all other country locations.
  • Costs Approx 40c/bk between Sydney-Newcastle
approx 56c/bk to NSW country regions.

15
Technical Considerations
  • We have purchased NCIP server software from
    ExLibris.
  • We are providing catalog, item and borrower
records for testing to Innovative Systems in the
    USA.
  • The work done to date by ExLibris has been
specifically designed to allow inter operation
with a Dynix product called URSA.
  • The ExLibris rep in Australia has checked with
staff in the Jerusalem and US offices and no-one
is aware of any ALEPH libraries that are using
NCIP to inter operate with INNReach.
  • ExLibris is planning a competitor to INNReach for
consortial borrowing, so there will be no further
development of NCIP in ALEPH 16.

16
Technical Considerations (cont)
  • ExLibris has partially implemented support for 8
services in NCIP Authenticate user Lookup user
Check out item Check in item Request item
Cancel request Accept item (under development)
Lookup item (under development). We are not sure
(yet) whether this will be adequate to inter
operate with the INNReach DCB server
  • The mechanism for supporting the NCIP protocol is
a server that listens for incoming requests in
XML format. The server parses, executes and
builds a reply, again in XML format, back to the
    client.
  • The INNReach architecture looks as follows
