Causes
  • Three different theories
  • Utero Malalignment
  • External Factors such as chemical abuse
  • Genetic Factors

Demographics
  • 1 out of every 1000 people on average are born
    with clubfoot.
  • Incidence of clubfoot varies significantly with
    race
  • Polynesians- 6.8 per 1000
  • Orientals- 0.57 per 1000
  • Caucasians- 1.2 per 1000
  • 50 of cases are bilateral.
  • Men get clubfeet twice as often as women.

Treatment
  • Two stages of treatment
  • Presurgery (also known as the Ponseti method)
  • Gentle massage and manipulation of the
    clubfoot to stretch the contracted muscles, then
    casting to prevent relapse.
  • Surgery
  • In the past, multiple surgeries were performed to
    correct clubfeet.
  • In the last 10-15 years, only one or two major
    surgeries are need to correct the problem.
