A written explanation that follows an order or ruling in a case by a judge or group of judges is normally called a legal opinion. Usually opinions are published according to the direction of the court. If a court decides to publish an opinion, it is included in a volume from a series of books called law reports. In common law legal systems, the published opinions of courts are also referred to as case law, which is one of the major sources of law. This kind of opinion explains what the case is about, and also discusses the relevant legal principles, in order to apply the law to the facts so that can reach a ruling in favor of one side. Modern judicial opinions reflect hundreds of years of history and practice and that actually follow a simple and predictable formula.
